Sometimes we do it in absolute silence. Sometimes we do it to the noises of the busy city street. Sometimes we do it to the endless drone of daytime TV, or the sweet ramblings of our favorite song. So I ask you fellow writers - what are you writing to?
I’m typically a person who needs sound. You know I’m really invested in a project if my earbuds are in and I can’t hear you over bass booming hiphop or the strained screaming of my favorite punk song. I am a lover of a wide array of music and what I am listening to definitely reflects in my writing. I have often used this to my advantage, to get in the right mindset for that perfect punk song or loss of love poem.
Sometimes the distraction can be a disadvantage of course. I think we’ve all had the moment of powering through a burdensome project getting derailed by attention shifting, and before we know it we’ve binged watched 5 seasons of X-Files. True life - I love X-Files.
Moral of this story is that I just got a new record in the mail from PA based band Hop Along off Saddle Creek Records and it has been the soundtrack to my writing moments since I’ve gotten it in, and I don’t see it going anywhere. I love getting new music that fits my current groove!
Check out Hop Along here, and leave me a comment with some new ish I should add to my writing soundtrack!
