Out Loud Academy: Zine Making Part 1 with instructor Sam Horton

Participants will be given a brief but detailed explanation and history of zines. I will bring copies of zines that I have collected to provide examples of different sizes, styles, types of binding and content. For our first group exercise, we will each create one mini zine (aka “pocket zine”) out of a single sheet of 8.5x11” paper. Participants will hand write/draw all content for zine, keeping it very simple. By the end of the first class, the participants will have already created a zine. Next, I will provide them with a sample of my own zine in the standard folded sheet size with a total of 12 pages, including front and back cover. I will invite the participants to begin conceptualizing their first full-sized zine, including the theme, content and title. Participants will be allowed to create a zine on any topic or theme that they wish. The goal of Class 1 is to conceive a concept for their first full-size zine. Homework will be fleshing out their concepts and gathering a portion of their content to bring back for class 2. (Please note, it is not required to attend all three zine classes)
